Kao Nhia Kue is a poet, storyteller, and educator. Kao's family came to Philadelphia as refugees following the Secret Wars in Laos (Vietnam War). The trauma of war and western colonization have had devastating effects on the Hmong community, including poverty, alcoholism, domestic violence, chronic heath illnesses, and mental health illnesses. Kao believes that the arts can address these challenging issues as well as help to bring healing to the community.
