Shyamali: Sprouting Words
Ananya Dance Theatre
Painted Bride Art Center
Friday, May 4, 8 p.m. & Saturday, May 5, 8 p.m.
Inspired by the numerous movements for justice around the world and the courage of women who refuse silence and sustain communities against injustice, Shyamali explores how dissent against oppression fuels life force. The 90-minute dance – structured in three acts (without intermission) – will be performed by ADT dancers and local community members. “Shyamali” means “dark green” in Bengali, and invokes the resilience of grass, which springs up even when trod upon.
Shyamali: Sprouting Words was made possible by the New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Shyamali: Sprouting Words is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project. The Creation Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). For more information: www.npnweb.org.
